Blue Tansy, also known as Moroccan Chamomile, is a member of the Daisy family (Asteraceae) and thrives in the arid regions of the southwestern Mediterranean Basin. It is primarily cultivated in northern Morocco and southern Spain. These common names—Blue Tansy and Moroccan Chamomile—have caused some confusion, as they suggest similarities to other well-known plants.
Botanically, Blue Tansy is closely related to ordinary Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) and shares its characteristic yellow flowers. However, while ordinary Tansy is toxic, Blue Tansy is prized in aromatherapy. The distinguishing “blue” in its name refers not to the flower color but to the oil it produces. During steam distillation, a compound called Chamazulene transforms into a vivid blue color. Chamazulene is also found in plants like Yarrow and German Chamomile, which similarly yield deep blue essential oils.
Thus, while Blue Tansy may visually resemble the toxic ordinary Tansy, its therapeutic properties are much more akin to those of German Chamomile.
This oil is one of almost 100 specialty / rare essential oils on the site.
